Audience,Genre,Rhetorical Analysis
Articles like Billy Collins “commencement address at Choate-Rosemary Hall”,Kathleen Blake Yancey “On Reflection”,and Lloyd Blitzer’s “Rhetorical Situation” all discuss audience, genre and rhetorical analysis in one way or another. The three articles are written for different types of audiences and speeches like Billy Collins commencement address the authors had no idea that their writing pieces were going to be used for any audience other than the one that they originally presented it to.
In Billy Collins commencement speech he starts off by saying he was not going to give the graduates any advice that he would not follow himself. He simply stated that his one main point of advice for them was for them to slow down and not rush things as the chorus of the world kept urging them to just go faster. The genre for this is not only speech but also poetry. His intended audience for this was originally the graduating class whose graduation he was delivering this speech at along with their friends and family who were there to support them. Lastly the way he reaches his intended audience at the time was through the form of rhetorical analysis that is used to not only entertain an audience but also inform the audience at the time.
In Kathleen Blake Yancey’s article On Reflection she discusses how in the late 1970’s and into the 1980’s students in her writing class were asked to take part in a research project that was geared towards the writing process. However they were supposed to be teaching the students how to write but somehow they already knew how to write without the help from them. The most important part of this article focuses on reflection and why it is important to reflect. I believe that reflection should be a big part of everything we do. When we reflect we are able to sit back and review our work and using the form of reflection we are able to realize what we did wrong and what we did right. This is especially helpful when we are taking part in something new and need to figure out what worked and what did not work. Reflection is important in the english world as it is what writers should be doing to learn about not only their writing but also their self as a person. The form of genre that Yancey uses is to inform the reader of the different ways that reflection can help us learn about ourselves.
In the final article Rhetorical Situation by Lloyd Blitzer he discusses rhetorical situations and how he defines rhetorical situations. He asks himself what a rhetorical situation is along with how they should be described, what are the characteristics and why and how do they result in the creation of rhetoric. He states that the nature of those contexts in which speakers or writers define rhetorical situations is how they create rhetorical discourse. The genre in which this is presented is in the form of informing the audience. Blitzer basically stated the same thing that I did in the beginning and that is the fact that the author of these articles had no idea that their work would be used for things beyond the original presentation that they wrote it for. This is especially true for Billy Collins commencement speech I mentioned earlier.
As I mentioned before each of these authors shine light on different topics such as genre, reflection and rhetorical situation and audience. In Collins he discusses the audience without even mentioning it. He manages to do that by making his readings acceptable for all different types of audiences. His speech can also be used on multiple occasions not just for the group of people he wrote it for.
Before reading the pieces about genre I thought genre Genre was an overall theme or topic chosen for writing pieces. In younger grades I was taught that the genre is the overall theme and focus point that helps to tie everything together and make it easier for the reader. But now that I have read the reading and have a better understanding of the genre I better understand it and interpret the genre as being carried out in patterned, typical ,and intelligible text forms. My definition is overall them but he makes his definition more detailed and down to the specifics. Commencement speeches tend to focus on motivating for life after graduation whatever that may be and the other speakers like collins and the ones linked below focus on giving more of a raw real life perspective point of view. In other words they are not giving the graduating class any advice that they have not yet followed themselves.
As mentioned above the three different articles cover the topics of audience, genre and rhetorical situation. Reading these articles I saw my views and opinions on the changing from piece to piece. After reading all three I found myself thinking more deeply and critically about the three topics they covered and I soon hope to find myself being a creative thinker and writer based on now knowing the more “creative definitions.’

From one reading to the next I saw my view of the different terms mentioned above changing. I found myself thinking deeper and more critically about the overall definition instead of just having the basic everyday definition of them I now have the more advanced theological version of them and I am able to think more creatively about them
