Welcome to my building block portion of my portfolio here you can find all of my building blocks which are sorta like steps I took to creating my writing pieces.
2:4 Building Block
For my research assignment I feel pretty good about it. The only thing I found myself doing quite often was comparing my writing to the sample piece and then I would have to remind myself that the sample pieces have been in the works much longer than I have been working on this assignment so other than that I did not run into other issues. I had one little bump in the road figuring out what groups I could and could not interview and observe. Being a psychology major I have had the opportunity to work with research articles previous to this assignment so I was not as overwhelmed as I expected to be.

Question
How does having a disability affect someone’s self esteem and their day to day life ?
Working Research Questions
How does having a learning disability affect someone’s self esteem and everyday life ?
How is the upbringing of kids with disabilities affected as they transition to adulthood ?
How is the communication between children with disabilities different from the communication with non-disabled children ?
Revised Research Question FINAL
How is the communication and interactions between abled body children and disabled children vary across the different communities ?
Audience
My audience for this would be the general public as I feel that they are the ones that need to be educated on this kind of stuff the most and I also feel that they are the most judgmental towards disabled people.
Reason
I chose this research topic because being an individual with a disability I know how kids with and without disabilities can interact in positive and negative ways and I want to make people aware of the separation between the two so that they can help to hopefully resolve it and make it a comfortable environment for whomever might want to be there with positive communication and getting along.
Research plan
- Field observations – Talking with children or the parents of children with disabilities and talking with children or the parents of children without disabilities about how their communication is different from each other.
- Survey- I would then conduct a survey or complete an observation in an atmosphere in which both groups of children interact.
- Methods – explaining in my essay what I did for my field observations and a little background about the people I used to collect my data
- Research from the library– using the UCBA library to gather more information on to help with in the gaps with more information.
- Summary of findings- tying all loose end together and summarize everything included earlier in the essay.
2:1 Building Block
The reason I am interested in doing more research with my topic is because I would like to encourage the everyday people to see the disabled as normal people to instead of judging and pointing. I have personal experience with this and would like to be able to educate people how their body language towards us makes us feel less confident in ourselves and the way we live life from day to day. The way we are seen by the general public and the way they react makes it very hard for us to even want to go out in public in fear of being judged. This us why I would like to do this topic because I want to be an advocate for not only myself as a disabled person but also all of the other people that may not feel good about being an advocate for such a sensitive topic.
