A discourse community is something that I was unfamiliar with until I read swales but it was still confusing until I heard it discussed in class. I also did not realize how many discourse communities I belong to as I did not even know what one is. Some of the ones I belong to are being a part of a family as I have a very large family so that is obviously a very big discourse community for me. Just as any other family we of course have our shared beliefs and values for our family and I find that to also be a very big part of that discourse community. Another discourse community that I had no idea about was with me being the oldest of all my siblings I am apart of the discourse community for that also. Within that community there are many ways to provide each other advice and feedback. Also some of the shared beliefs that go along with that are all of us agreeing that one day we want to have our siblings looking up to us and we want to be their role model which can be a big commitment having to watch everything you say and do so that they will not want to follow into negative footsteps.
I also didn’t know that being apart of a certain community with certain goals, lingo, etc was a discourse community until reading Swales piece. Looking back at my life, I now know why I wasn’t part of some communities. Those reasons are because of Swales characteristics.

Mackenzie, whether we like it or not, we identify as a part of a community. Actually that doesn’t even have to be true considering that you could totally move out into the middle of nowhere and isolate yourself from all humanity. Even so, having a voice and being able to share it can be a good thing. The concept of discourse necessitates that two people may enter into a dialogue. That won’t occur if everyone behaves exactly the same way and believes the exact same things. In a way, being in a discourse community is an acknowledgment that you are unique and your voice may be singular, so you always will have something to bring to the table.
